FILE 10 OF 17 / —

not yours, no̶t̶ mine

  • HEARTBEAT ABSENT
  • SLEEP UNAVAILABLE
  • ONE WORD STRUCK THROUGH

“I don't miss you, I miss the point”

CASE NOTE

She used to fall asleep counting someone else's heartbeat. A year later the handwriting still lives under her skin, and what she reaches for at night is the weight, the warmth and the rhythm, whoever it belonged to.

Filed in earlier drafts as "Dice": the love was a bet she placed knowing the odds. On the sleeve, the second "not" is struck through.

LYRICS / TRANSCRIPT

Verse 1

I used to sleep on borrowed time

Your chest, my quiet country

I'd count the beats until they aligned

With something close to mercy

Your hands were slow in my hair

Like the world had stopped its turning

I didn't know I was learning

How to rest inside a lie

Pre-Chorus

I rolled the dice and lost the night

I rolled the dice and lost my quiet

Chorus

Now I can't hear a heartbeat

Not yours, not mine

Just the silence where a body

Used to keep the time

I lay awake and reach for something

That was never really mine

Can't hear a heartbeat

Not yours

Not mine

(Not yours, not mine)

Verse 2

One year and your handwriting still lives in me

Like water stains that dried beneath the skin

I've named you, I've survived you, tried to be free

The body still flinches where your hands used to reach

Some nights it isn't you I want

Just the weight, the warmth, the rhythm

Something holding me together

While I'm coming apart

From within

Pre-Chorus

I rolled the dice and lost the night

I rolled the dice and lost myself

Chorus

Now I can't hear a heartbeat

Not yours, not mine

Just the silence where a body

Used to keep the time

I lay awake and reach for something

That was never really mine

Can't hear a heartbeat

Not yours

Not mine

Bridge

It's not you

I know it's not you

It's just the sound of being held

When every hell came loose

The dark beneath your ribcage

A room I used to breathe into

I don't miss you, I miss the point to—

Try luck in a quiet bet

No winning, no regret

Just a gamble in a love that fades

With every little breath

Middle Eight

I learned to rest inside a lie

And now the lie won't hold me tight

I've forgotten how to sleep

Without a cold heartbeat

Final Chorus

Now I can't hear a heartbeat

Not yours, not mine

Just the silence where a body

Used to keep the time

I lay awake and reach for something

That was never really mine

Can't hear a heartbeat

Not yours

Not mine

Outro

Nothing can compare

To when you roll the dice

And swear your love's for me

Nothing can compare

To when you roll the dice

And swear your love's for me
