FILE 01 OF 17 / —

crack in the gla/ss

  • PERFORMANCE: FLAWLESS
  • INTERIOR: UNREPORTED
  • ONE HAIRLINE DETECTED

“Did everything right and it still went black”

CASE NOTE

Part II opens where Part I left off, on lines from the novel: the neurotic who wants two things at once, and the world as a bad dream seen from inside the jar. Then the song lists every life she was handed and performed on cue.

"I'm fine" has been said to the doctor, the mirror and the phone so often it is carved into bone. The slash in the title is the crack itself. The file ends on a request for a close-up and one question: is there no way out of the mind?

LYRICS / TRANSCRIPT

Intro

If neurotic is wanting two mutually exclusive things at once

And at the same time

Then, well, I'm fucking neurotic

I'll be flying back and forth between one thing and another

For the rest of my days

To the person in the bell jar

Blank and stopped as a dead baby

The world itself...

Is the bad dream

Verse 1

I made a list of the lives I should lead

Tried every shape that was handed to me

Good pace, good face, all the right words

A standing ovation I barely heard

I move through the days like a ghost in the shell

Perfection is my own living hell

Every mirror says I'm exactly on track

I smile at them all

(And I think they smile back?)

Pre-Chorus

Body goes through all the motions in time

Waves, laughs, prances, never misses a line

And I watch from somewhere behind my own eyes

And I watch from somewhere behind my own disguise

Chorus

Crack in the glass

Crack, crack, cracking the glass

Did everything right and it still went black

I'm porcelain quiet, ice in a dress

Everybody loves me when I look my best

Crack in the glass

C-c-crack in the glass

One little line

And the whole thing cracks

Verse 2

They laid out my future like plates in a row

I carried them all so nobody would know

"I'm fine" to the doctor, the mirror, the phone

I've said it so much shit got carved in my bones

I answer in cursive, I laugh on the beat

Built a whole fraud from my neck to my feet

And somewhere inside the machinery hums

I hear it so loud when the evening comes

Am I the only one?

Pre-Chorus

Body goes through all the motions in time

Smiles when it's cued, never misses a line

The one behind the glass is fading from sight

The one behind the glass really wants to die

Chorus

Crack in the glass

Cra-cra-cracking the glass

Did everything right and it still went black

I'm porcelain quiet, ice in a dress

Everyone's proud of a gorgeous mess

Crack in the glass

Cra-cra-cracking the glass

One little line

And the whole thing cracks

Bridge

I held up the reflection for so long

My shoulders memorized the shape of the pain

I don't know who the weight actually belongs to

But watch how beautifully I bend and break

(B-b-bend and b-b-break)

Chorus

Cracking the glass, crack, crack in the glass

Doing it right and I still couldn't last

I'm porcelain cracking, mess with no class

Everyone loves watching a train wreck

Crack in the glass

(Everyone's proud)

Crack in the glass

(Till the damage gets loud)

Crack in the glass

(Fake looks better, bitch!)

C-c-crack in the glass

One little line

And the whole thing cracks

(I think I'm ready for my close-up)

Outro

Nobody sees when the world goes grey

When "How are you?" only wants "okay"

A restless mind is a burden I can't share

Just once I wish someone

Would ask what's really here...

Is there no way out of the mind?
