IN HER WORDS / HAYLIE FERGUSON

“It sounds like an anthem of overcoming. It's an admission of our vulnerability as human beings. I love a breakup anthem, and I didn't believe myself enough to write one without footnotes. So the song dresses vulnerability as dance-pop: a steady beat holding up every I don't need you, while the lyric keeps slipping uncertainty underneath it.

People say you need someone else to be happy, and I agree. We also need so many other things around that. Happiness can be shared, it can feel most real when it's shared, and it's better when you know you can have it without that something extra. We carry this eternal ache. A suitcase of traumas, fears and reservations that never gets emptied. From the day we're born it only gets heavier.

The narrator has the whole kit for independence: cool built like armor, lipstick, glitter, discipline. She can dance under the lights and kiss somebody else tonight. And still, when the lights go low and blue, she's a little scared. The chorus admits the real fear: being that whole. The bridge brings back Tastes A Little Like You, with his name showing up in someone else's mouth, and asks why being complete feels like standing without skin. Even the last lines hedge. I'll be whole, at least I hope.

So instead of treating independence as look at me, I'm unstoppable, I went to Sade. Whenever I saw people listening to her when I was younger, it felt incredibly chic, the peak of maturity. At my age now, still growing up like everyone, I hear in her the softness, the calm and the temperance of acceptance. Life rarely turns out the way we want, and we can still admit what it brings us and decide what to do with it.

We can be alone. We will be alone. We have to learn to be alone. And sometimes we simply don't want to be, even for a little while, even knowing we could. Walking home with someone at five in the morning is a small thing to want, and it's in the chorus for a reason: it's the ride back home, with company. The childhood idea that we need someone to be happy and the bruised, post-trauma idea that we need nobody both miss it. Maturity is knowing we can, and that even when we think we can't, we'll have to be happy on our own. The real change for me was separating wholeness from never needing anybody. I want to be complete enough that closeness becomes a choice, and stops being life support. And then: what if we don't want to? What about the days we don't want to? That's where this song lives, and that's why Sade, whom I love, became the way to bring vulnerability and maturity together.”

CASE NOTE

Independence as a dance-floor anthem, with the fear showing through. The narrator can glow under the lights and kiss somebody else, and still wants the walk home at five with the one she let go to prove a point.

The bridge names the real loss: the proof that she could love without a bruise. The final chorus opens into strings and double harmonies, and each promise to be whole comes with its own small hesitation.

LYRICS / TRANSCRIPT

Verse 1

I learned the hard way playing tough

Is just another kind of bluff

Tried so hard not to believe

That love could make a fool of me

Built my cool like armor skin

Lipstick, glitter, discipline

But every time I close the door

I want you knocking even more

Pre-Chorus

I say I’m fine, I say I’m good

I move my hips like nothing could

But when the lights go low and blue

I’m still a little scared of you

Chorus

I don’t need you to feel alive

I don’t need you to survive

I can dance under these lights

Kiss somebody else tonight

But damn, it would feel so right

Walking home with you at five

I don’t need you in my world

But I’m scared to be that whole

Whole without you

Verse 2

Forgive the chaos in my veins

Tiny heart, colossal flames

I’m something small that needs a touch

And something wild that loves too much

I push away what I adore

Say I’m bored when I want more

I let you go to prove I’m strong

Then miss you all night long

Pre-Chorus

Being whole is bravery

But you rewired that part of me

Now every time I start again

You itch underneath my skin

Chorus

I don’t need you to feel alive

I don’t need you to survive

I can glow in neon heat

Standing steady on my feet

But damn, it would feel so right

Laughing with you in the night

I don’t need you in my world

But I’m scared to be that whole

Whole without you

Bridge

When you left, you took the proof

That I could love without a bruise

Now every time I start to trust

I taste your name in someone else’s mouth

Tell me why being complete

Feels like standing without skin

If I let somebody see me

Will they see where you’ve been?

Chorus

I don’t need you to feel alive (I’m alive)

I don’t need you to survive (no, I don’t)

I can own this city light

Be complete in my own right

But damn, it would feel so right (so right)

Not to run from love this time (don’t run)

I don’t need you in my world

But I’m done being half a soul

I’ll be whole (I’ll be whole)

Whole without you (without you)

I’ll be whole (don’t look back)

Whole without you (I won’t crack)

Whole, whole without you (At least I hope)

Whole, whole without you (Please, I wanna grow)

If I open up the door

I won’t break like before

I’m whole

Without you
